Considered Mascagni’s one-act masterpiece, Cavalleria Rusticana packs a huge emotional punch! This passionate drama is about ordinary people pushed to their extremes. Turiddu, an Italian soldier, has returned from military duty to discover that his fiancée Lola is married to another man, Alfio. In revenge, he seduces a girl from the village, Santuzza, but the jealous Lola quickly steals him back, and she and Turiddu have a torrid affair… This powder keg of emotions ignites on Easter Sunday, as Santuzza, driven by jealousy and revenge, betrays Turiddu’s and Lola’s affair to Alfio – a horrible mistake, as it seals the fate of the man she worships. This heart-wrenching story of love, jealousy & revenge includes achingly beautiful melodies such as: the Easter Hymn Chorus and the gorgeous Intermezzo.
