Joshua Kohl
Tenor Joshua Kohl has enjoyed a professional career spanning more than two decades, performing leading roles throughout the United States and Europe. Praised by The Washington Post for his “strong, ringing” voice, his repertoire has ranged from Mozart and bel canto through Verdi, Puccini, Britten, Janáček, and the dramatic works of the late Romantic repertoire.
Kohl spent six years as an ensemble member at Theater Freiburg in Germany, where his roles included, among others, Des Grieux in Manon, Pinkerton in Madama Butterfly, Lenski in Eugene Onegin, Fenton in Falstaff, Peter Quint in The Turn of the Screw, and Eiolf in Franck’s Hulda. His performance as Eiolf can also be heard on the opera’s Naxos recording.
Other career highlights include the title role in Amleto with OperaDelaware; Váňa Kudrjaš in Káťa Kabanová and Brighella in Ariadne auf Naxos with Seattle Opera; Alfredo in La traviata with Opera Omaha; Edgardo in Lucia di Lammermoor with Dayton Opera; Nemorino in L’elisir d’amore with Knoxville Opera; Nanki-Poo in The Mikado with Hawaii Opera Theatre and Lyric Opera of Kansas City; and Rodolfo in La bohème with Opera Southwest and the National Theatre in Belgrade. He has also appeared with Pittsburgh Opera, Minnesota Opera, Utah Opera, Sarasota Opera, Nashville Opera, Virginia Opera, and Dallas Opera.
On the concert stage, Kohl has appeared in works including Mahler’s Das Lied von der Erde, Handel’s Messiah, Bach’s Mass in B minor, Orff’s Carmina Burana, and Mendelssohn’s Symphony No. 2. He was a National Semifinalist in the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions.
Kohl earned degrees from the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music and Boston University and pursued advanced operatic study at Yale University. He currently serves as Artistic Director of Fargo-Moorhead Opera.
